Occupational Burnout Intervention Program
Occupational burnout is only increasing, and research has shown that healthcare workers are at a particular risk.
Compared to 2019, burnout among physicians also has increased drastically (LINK). As a sonographer who was working overnights during the Covid-19 pandemic, I experienced the challenges and felt the collective trauma. I realized that the pandemic only re-surfaced old problems and wounds, thus I became interested in studying burnout and finding ways to help my fellow sonographers. Recent research has shown that sonographers are highly experiencing burnout and they’re either retiring early or changing careers. Current sonographer shortage is alarming.(LINK)
From my personal experience as a sonographer, but also from the research I’ve conducted regarding sonographers burnout, I have realized that sonographers are 1)needed 2)very capable and good at their job 3) very passionate about their job. However, burnout is getting in their way, and a lot of them feel so overwhelmed and stuck in toxic environments that it is impossible to look at the other side; to remind themselves why they chose this profession. As a sonographer I deeply care for sonographers who are working in pain for many years, and as a Clinical Assistant Professor training future sonographers, I also care about my students’ future in this career. I have trained amazing students who are now working in many different sites throughout NYC. Despite their enthusiasm and motivation, I see them struggling in clinical sites, as many sites are short staffed, sonographers are overworked and burned out, which affects their ability to train students effectively. It’s a never ending cycle which is only going to get worse if nothing is being done. Research showed that ergonomic training wasn’t working, thus I worked on finding a better solution; and this is how the Intervention Program came to life. In this program you will learn why ergonomic training is not effective, how to manage stress and conflict at work and mitigate burnout. Patients need you; doctors need you; our students need you!!!
Some of my coworkers had to get surgeries for their shoulder, and many other sonographers who I interviewed and got to know also were struggling with work related musculoskeletal disorder. It is time to take care of yourself!
I invite you to join my 10 week program intervention to learn coping skills to deal with burnout, reignite your passion for the profession and allow yourself to grow AND do what you love without sacrificing your well-being! I provide receipts and other documentations you might need to get reimbursed from your job if they offer professional development awards!
Physicians are also part of the team we as sonographers interact with and who are also experiencing significant burnout. If you are a physician sign up under “Intervention Program for Physicians” (see below). I also offer 1:1 individual coaching for all other professions.
